How to Pass the PERT
A calm, practical plan for a low-drama test. The goal isn't a heroic score — it's placing into the classes you're ready for and skipping the ones you're not.
First, reset what 'pass' means
You don't pass or fail the PERT; you get placed. A higher result skips a prep course, a lower one adds one. That's the whole stakes ladder — which is genuinely good news, because it means a focused weekend of practice has a concrete, visible payoff and zero catastrophe attached.
A four-step plan that fits a weekend
Find your baseline
Take a mixed run on the full practice test before you study anything. You need to know which subtest actually needs your weekend — guessing wastes the weekend on the area you already like.
Drill the weak subtest by difficulty
Start on Easy to rebuild the reflexes, then push into Medium and Hard, where the placement-moving questions live. Repetition on the right subtest beats a broad review of everything.
Read every rationale — especially on right answers
Understanding beats recognition the moment the adaptive engine changes the numbers on you. If you can't say why the answer is right, you haven't learned it yet.
Show up rested, not crammed
The test is untimed at most colleges, so your only real enemy on the day is a rushed, tired brain. Sleep is a legitimate study strategy.
A lower placement isn't a verdict on you. It's a semester of runway you can shorten with a weekend of drills.
